# 04 · Layout and grid

**PRINCIPLE** — Every surface is composed, not templated.

**RULE** — Margin = 1/20 of the width and 12 columns always; usually invisible. Frames, title blocks and info blocks are optional tools chosen by the composition mode. Video uses its own 9:16 grid (14).

**WHEN TO USE** — Every format.

**WHEN NOT TO USE** — —

**DO**
- Align to the grid even when it is not drawn
- Choose the mode before placing devices

**DON’T**
- A visible frame on every surface
- An info block on every surface
